Chapter 4 What to think

You have to get into good mental connections with health rather than negative mental relations with illness. Health is to be given or received, and not rejected or denied. Casting out the devil achieves next to nothing, because he will return with much worse devils. As soon as you open yourself completely to health, you have to sever your ties with illness. The Science of Being Well begins with making full mental connection with good health.

the easiest method to accomplish this is to create a mental image or picture of oneself as being well, and to spend sufficient time in pondering this image to make it your regular idea of yourself

This is not as simple as it seems, and it requires significant time to practice meditation so that you can create a clear mental image of yourself in an idealized or perfect body. Creating mental images of things one desires to obtain is considerably simpler, like in “The Science of Getting Rich.” However, we have never seen a flawless physique, and forming a clear mental picture is difficult.

While having a clear mental picture of oneself as you want to be is not required, you DO need to conceptualize ideal health and connect yourself to it. Health is more than just the absence of disease. It is a belief in well-being and complete health.

Picture yourself as ideal in body. This helps, and you must think of yourself as being strong and healthy as an individual. See yourself walking down the street with an erect body and a vigorous stride; do your day’s work easily and with surplus vigor, never tired or weak; picture everything done by a person full of health and energy, and see yourself as the main figure in the picture, carrying out tasks in just that way. Instead than wondering about what weaker or sicker individuals do, focus about what stronger people do. Constantly think about yourself in relation to the Strong Way of Doing Things. This is how I see health:

Man does not have to learn anatomy or physiology in order to create a mental picture of each individual organ and therefore deal with them one by one. Liver, kidneys, stomach, and heart do not need “treatment”. The Principle of health has influence over all involuntary processes, and the idea of perfect health will reach each portion and organ. The Principle of Health is one.

The less you dig into physiology, the better for you. Incomplete understanding of this discipline can rise to distorted thinking. Imperfect thinking creates illness. I’ll show you: Until very recently, the time that humans can live without food for 10 days was believed to be their physical maximum. This belief was widely spread, such that by now, everyone knows that those who are hungry would die within five to ten days. Many individuals who have fasted from forty to sixty days have shown that it is possible to survive without food. With appropriate education, anybody may fast for twenty to forty days and frequently not show any decrease in strength at all. Because they felt death was imminent, those who died of starvation in 10 days or less starved to death. When deprived of food, a man will typically survive ten to fifty days, depending on his understanding of food deprivation. The consequences of an erroneous physiology may be disastrous.

The science of well-being can’t be based on existing physiology; it is not precise enough. Very little is really known about the insides of the body’s workings. It is unknown how food is digested, and what role food plays if any in the production of force. The liver, spleen, and pancreas remain mostly unknown in terms of their specific functions or secretions. We speculate on all these things, but we don’t truly know. When man starts to study physiology, he enters the realm of theory and dispute; he is destined to develop erroneous notions about himself. These faulty assumptions make us think incorrect thoughts, and this impacts our health negatively. Everything that the most perfect understanding of physiology could accomplish for man was to enable him to think only ideas of perfect health, and to eat, drink, breathe, and sleep in a perfectly healthy manner. This is shown here.

This is true of all hygiene. Later chapters will discuss a few basic ideas. Besides these ideas, pay little attention to physiology and hygiene. Thinking on circumstances of imperfection creates such conditions in your own body. To study no science that identifies illness is to think only of health.

Stop investigating your current state, its causes, or potential outcomes, and put yourself to thinking about what constitutes health.

Concentrate on being healthy and imagine all the things you could do and enjoy if you were in perfect health. Once you have accepted this idea, think about yourself in a way that is in accordance with it. When any notion of illness or disorder occurs in your mind, immediately banish it by envisioning a positive thought.

See oneself as having realized conception; being a strong and healthy person; and do not hold an opposite idea.

When you conceive of yourself as being part of this idea, the Original Substance that penetrates and fills your tissues is taking shape in accordance with your thoughts, and this Intelligent Substance or mind stuff will lead your body to be rebuilt with perfectly healthy cells.

Intelligent Substance pervades and penetrates everything, which is why it is found in and inside your body. It moves based on its ideas; if you think solely about healthy function, it will produce healthy motion in you.

Do not allow yourself to conceive about perfect health except in terms of yourself. Have trust in this idea; it is definitely the truth. That is your whole mental body’s truth right now. You have a mind-body, and a physical body; just as you think of yourself, your thoughts turn into your physical self. Bringing flawless functioning to mind-body thinking eventually produces perfect functioning in the physical body.

We cannot transfigure our physical bodies at whim like Jesus did. As substance travels along the set lines of growth it has created, and as it receives health thought, the healthy body is formed from cell to cell. When you only have the idea of ideal health, you will always end up with a perfectly healthy body. Thus, this chapter may be condensed into a syllabus:

You are penetrated and equipped with an Intelligent Substance, which creates a Mind-Body. Your thoughts govern your actual body. A diseased or malfunctioning mind directly produces illness or dysfunction in the physical body. Diseased because incorrect ideas have left imprints on this mind-stuff; these may have been either your own thoughts or those of your parents. The mind tends to health, and if no ideas are retained save thoughts of health, all internal functions will come to be conducted in a healthy way.

All the powers of nature are within you.
