Chapter 10 What to Eat
No progress has been achieved in finding answers to the question, “What should I eat?” If we rely on these scientists, we will never know what is the natural diet of man. Turning aside from the entire debate, we will investigate if nature has left us without an answer.
Most nutritional scientists’ mistakes stem from a misconception about human nature. It is believed that civilization and mental growth are unnatural things; that the guy who lives in a modern home, in city or country, and who works in modern commerce or industry for his livelihood is living an unnatural existence, and that the only “natural” man is a naked barbarian. This is incorrect. Those who have all that art and science can provide them with a life filled with art and science. The well-appointed metropolitan apartment dweller is far more “naturally human” than the Australian tribal person who lives in a tree or a cave.
The Great Intelligence, which is in all things, has essentially decided the issue of what we’ll consume. It has determined that man’s diet should be according to where he lives. It is cold where you are; fuel foods are needed. The growth of the brain is neither big nor life-sustaining, which explains why the Inuit subsist mostly on blubber and fat from aquatic creatures. They can’t consume fruits, nuts, or veggies even if they wanted to, and they couldn’t survive in that environment if they could obtain them. So, despite the arguments of the vegetarians, the Esquimaux will continue to survive on animal fats.
To summarize, in the tropics, fuel foods are less important, and people naturally choose to follow a vegetarian diet. The dietary regimen of an Esquimaux community, if followed near the equator, would result in quick death for millions. People in the equatorial parts of the world will mostly eat a natural diet; however those living near the North Pole, and who are not directed by medical or dietary “experts,” will generally feed themselves by being led by the All-Intelligence, which promotes optimal health for everyone. God is working behind the scenes in nature and culture to ensure your health; and I urge you to trust in Him for your dietary needs.
This is the region where we discover the biggest diversity of foods available naturally. It is needless to speculate on the issue of what the masses consume; they have no other option than to eat the staple foods of the area in which they reside. It is difficult to provide everyone with a nut-and-fruit or raw food diet. This fact demonstrates that nature did not design us to acquire the essentials of life via this kind of diet. And so, I reply, your question has already been addressed. Wheat, maize, rye, oats, barley, buckwheat; vegetables; meats, fruits, the majority of people in the world consume. Generally, they involve choosing specific meals and cooking them in similar ways. In these areas, God has led the race. Your own preference must be taken into consideration while selecting the list of foods, as illustrated in the following two chapters.
If you do not eat until you are hungry, you will not seek for harmful or unnatural meals. The woodchopper, who has swung his axe constantly from seven in the morning until midday, does not enter demanding sweets; instead, he asks for pork and beans, beefsteak and potatoes, or corn bread and cabbage. To be offered a plate of lettuce while cracking walnuts will get frowns from your workingman co-workers. Work-related hunger is the only true hunger, and as such needs the same kind of food to fulfill it, regardless of the occupation of the person.
Food must not be carefully chosen to suit the occupation of the eater. The woodcutter needs “heavy” or “solid” meals, while the accountant requires “light” foods. When you’re a bookkeeper or brain worker, you won’t be satisfied until you’ve EARNED a full stomach. He is literally composed of the same stuff as the woodchopper. So why is he fed bread and ham and eggs and given crackers and toast? It is true that most of his waste is muscle; but, it is also true that the woodchopper’s diet has superior proportions of the nutrients required for developing brain and nerve tissue. Fare from the working people has provided the world’s finest brainwork. The best thinkers have all been lower-class people.
Allow the accountant to sit until he is hungry; then, if he wants ham, eggs, and cornbread, feed him; but make sure he remembers that he doesn’t require one-twentieth of the quantity necessary for the woodcutter. Not eating “hearty” meals causes the brain indigestion, but rather consuming a considerable amount does. Eating to satisfy hunger does not induce indigestion; eating to please desire does. If you follow the instructions in the next chapter, your palate will learn to like anything you desire. As your palate becomes used to that, you will be able to abandon the entire issue of what you can and cannot eat. There is just one method to do this. You must not have any thoughts save of health; for if you are uncertain about obtaining the proper bills of fare, you cannot think about health.
“Eat anything you want,” Jesus stated, and he was correct. A typical middle-class or working-class family’s daily menu can completely feed your body if you eat according to a strict schedule and manner. You should either eat meat or don’t eat meat; you do not have to replace meat for anything else. Nothing is more wasteful than what remains after the meat has been taken away.
No “varied” diet is required to obtain all the essential nutrients. Hindus and the Chinese make great bodies and intelligent minds on a diet of simple foods, including rice. The Scots are strong and robust on oats, while the Irishman is well-proportioned and intelligent on potatoes and meat. Wheat berries provide everything you need to develop your brain and body, and you may thrive on a diet of navy beans.
Form a mental image of excellent health, and avoid holding any other thoughts.
Eat till you are really hungry. Bear in mind that starvation won’t harm you in the slightest; but denying yourself food will lead to serious problems.
Do not give the least consideration to what you should or should not eat; just consume what is placed before you, choosing that which pleases your taste best. Therefore, eat what you want. Eating the correct manner will guarantee flawless outcomes; and how to accomplish this will be addressed in the next chapter.
