Chapter 12 Hunger and Appetites
It is simple to answer the question, How much should I eat? Do not eat until you have earned the food, and quit the moment you sense that your hunger is decreasing. Never over-consume food; don’t overeat. You will stop feeling hungry when you are full; until then, you will continue to experience the sense of hunger. You should feel content before you’ve finished half your normal serving since you followed the directions in the previous chapter. Even if the dessert or pie or pudding seems delicious, avoid eating it until your hunger has been sufficiently quelled by the other things you’ve already eaten.
Nothing you consume after your hunger starts to diminish is provided for taste or appetite, and is not required by nature. It is such excess. It can not fail to do harm.
This is a topic you should monitor carefully, since the tendency of eating for physical pleasure is widespread among most of us. A dessert made just to induce people to eat after their hunger has been satiated is inherently bad; everything else is secondary. It is not that pies and cakes are unhealthy foods; if consumed as a snack, they are absolutely healthful. Begin your dinner with pies, cakes, pastries, or puddings, then end with the more bland, and less delicious, items. Generally speaking, however, by following the advice given in the previous chapters, you will soon discover that ordinary food will begin to taste heavenly to you, as your sense of taste improves with the more general improvements to your health. The guy who eats solely for hunger doesn’t get any enjoyment from a meal, and he always quits when he feels the need for another bite of food. The first indication that your appetite is diminishing is your subconscious signaling you to stop.
The typical individual who adopts this way of life will be astonished to discover how little food is needed to maintain a healthy physique. It depends on the quantity of physical activity and the degree to which the individual is exposed to cold. In the winter, the woodcutter who wields his axe all day gets two full meals, while the brain worker who sits all day on a chair in a heated room only gets one third of the calories required. Most woodchoppers consume two or three times as much, and most brain workers from three to ten times as much as nature asks for. This enormous waste of food from their diets taxes the power which depletes their vitality, and makes them vulnerable to illness. Enjoy the flavors of your meal, but do not eat just because the food tastes nice; and as soon as you are no longer hungry, stop eating.
Consider for a minute, and you will realize that there are no other options available to you other than the one given forth in this plan. Other than eating when you’re hungry, there is no other method to determine the appropriate time to eat. It is self-evident that this is the appropriate time to eat, and any other is a time to avoid. It has been determined that the bulk of mankind should consume the basic foodstuffs of the regions in which they reside. Your zone’s staples are appropriate for you; and as with all Eternal Wisdom, it is working within the brains of the masses of mankind and teaching them how to best prepare these meals. Reason tells us that the more thorough and precise the surgery, the better.
To conclude, success is the result of making each individual success in itself. You must make each activity count, even if it seems little, and avoid letting your whole day’s effort fail. If each day’s activities are successful, your life will not be defined by failure. A major success is the consequence of executing a lot of little things correctly. Good thoughts and healthy actions will cause you to become healthy quickly. One cannot develop a method to effectively consume more in line with the rules of life while chewing each mouthful to a liquid, savoring the flavor, and maintaining a joyful confidence while doing so. There is nothing you can do to improve the process; nevertheless, removing anything will not make the process healthy.
When it comes to how much to eat, there could be no other guidance more natural, safe, and trustworthy than the one I have recommended. When food is required, the sub-conscious mind is trusted to tell us; and when the need has been met, it is trusted implicitly to inform us. If you never eat for hunger, you will never eat too much; and if you always eat when you are hungry, you will always eat enough. To summarize the chapter that follows, you will see that the criteria for healthy eating are actually very basic and few.
Drinking in a natural manner may be ignored with a few short sentences. Drink just when you are thirsty; drink when you feel that your thirst starts to abate. While maintaining proper dietary habits is vital, eliminating self-denial in the area of drinking will not be required. To a fair degree, you may follow the conventions of people around you. Don’t acquire the soda fountain habit; don’t drink to tickle your taste with sweet drinks; drink water when you’re thirsty. Drinking a little water whenever you feel the least thirsty will ensure that you do not consume odd and abnormal beverages. Drink just to satisfy thirst; drink when you feel thirsty; and stop when you sense thirst abating. That is a good method to meet the body’s fluid needs.
